Rome (dpa) – The 60th edition of the Venice Art Biennale, set to begin in April 2024, will focus primarily on the themes of migration, exile and the experience of “foreignness.”

Reflecting this, the title of the event in the northern Italian city is “Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere,” curator Adriano Pedrosa and Biennale President Roberto Cicutto said on Thursday evening.

Being and feeling foreign will play an important role in the exhibition, according to the organizers.

“Wherever you go and wherever you are, you will always meet strangers. They/we are everywhere. Regardless of where you are, you are basically always a stranger,” said Brazilian-born Pedrosa.

The title invokes a series of sculptures begun in 2004 by the Paris-born and Palermo-based Claire Fontaine collective, which coined the slogan “Foreigners Everywhere.”

It is also the name of a Turin-based collective that fought racism in Italy in the early 2000s.

The art exhibition will run from April 20 to November 24, 2024, in the Giardini, the Arsenale and other locations in Venice.
