The surrealist artist Meret Oppenheim, who died in 1995 after making groundbreaking works like furry dishes and stiletto heels turned into poultry, is the subject of a major exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
Starting at the end of October, the show “Meret Oppenheim: My Exhibition” pulls together more than 180 paintings, drawings and sculptures by the Swiss artist, who was born in Berlin in 1913 and died in Basel in 1985.
Among them are several drawings in which Oppenheim herself once sketched out what an exhibition of her works might look like – but the curators at MoMA only partially adhered to this.
The Swiss artist, whose object constructions walked a fine line between practical everyday objects and surreal art, had a large repertoire of narrative paintings, jewellery designs, public sculptures and poetry.
“The subversive humour and imaginative range of Oppenheim’s decades-long artistic practice has yet to be fully appreciated,” said curator Anne Umland.

The MoMA show is scheduled to run from October 30 until March 4, 2023 at the renowned museum in the middle of Manhattan. ©dpa
